Preparations
- Tablet 10 mg and 20 mg
Mechanism of Action
- Potent proton pump inhibitor; suppresses gastric acid secretion by inhibiting the parietal cell H+/K+ ATP pump
Inidcations
- GERD: 20 mg once daily for 4 to 8 weeks up to 16 weeks
- Duodenal ulcer: 20 mg once daily before breakfast for 4 weeks
- Gastric ulcer: 20 mg po once daily for 4 to 6 weeks
- H. Pylori eradication: 20 mg twice daily, with Amoxy 1000 mg and Clarithromycin 500 mg twice daily for 7 days
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to rabeprazole or esomeprazole, lansoprazole, omeprazole, pantoprazole or any component of the formulation
Warnings/Precautions
May increase the risk of:
- Atrophic gastritis when used for long term
- Osteoporosis and bone fracture
- Hypomagnesemia
Drug Interactions
PPIs may reduce the therapeutic effect of clopidogrel through reduced formation of it’s active metabolite
- PPIs may increase the serum concentration of Amphetamines
- PPIs may decrease the serum concentration of Atazanavir, indinavir, Itraconazole
- PPIs May increase the metabolism of CYP3A4 Substrates

- QT Prolongation (<1%)
- Hemolytic anemia (<1%)
- Bradycarida (<1%)
- Abnormal vision (<1%)
- Arthralgia (<1%)
- Depression or delirium (<1%)
- May cause insomnia, anxiety, dizziness, nervousness, somnolence, vertigo, convulsions, abnormal dreams, agitation, amnesia, confusion, extrapyramidal syndrome
